Slim Fast Diet

The Slim Fast Diet is based on a popular brand of diet shake. The diet restricts calorie intake to 1,200 to 1,500 per day and requires drinking one serving of shake for breakfast and lunch and then eating a sensible dinner. It also allows light snacks between meals. The program also recommends regular exercise and water intake of 6-8 glasses. There are essentially no food group restrictions but it uses the slim fast shake as a complete meal replacement.

The diet has the following advantages:

  1. The slim fast diet is fuss free and very easy to follow
  2. At the beginning of the program, dieters lose weight fast

Unless the dieter is able to follow a good exercise program with this diet and takes additional vitamin supplements, the diet has the following disadvantages:

  1. The shakes do not have much nutritional value so the dieter might suffer from vitamin deficiencies
  2. The diet is not sustainable and can not be implemented as a lifetime health program
  3. Extreme weight loss at the beginning of the program due to very limited caloric intake can actually backfire when the dieter consumes additional calories later on
  4. Because of the amount of sugar contained in the shakes, blood sugar levels may shot through the roof leaving you with intense cravings and even fatigue when the effects of the sugar wears down
